Could have been a possum Attack...

The scariest thing just happened.
I just got home from hanging out with Melody and I turn the corner to walk up the stairs to my apartment and there was a HUGE possum sitting on the steps looking at me. UGHH! It was seriously the ugliest thing I have seen. It's mouth was open and it looked like it was going to attack me. I almost screamed...instead I just said, "OH!" and I turned around and ran. Then I realized that some of my neighbors were outside. I don't think they realized what was going on. I tried to play it off like I forgot something in my truck... So I stepped back from the situation and tried to come up with a plan to get into my apartment. I was trying to come up with alternative routes to get to my door. I could go up the other set of stairs, walk around the 2nd floor and come down the stairs on the other side of the building and come around the backside of where the possum was. Or...I could go back to my truck and wait until it moves...or I could walk around the building and try and get in my back door....or I could call Hilary and wake her up and have her come up with a plan for me....Or I could get my camera out and take a picture.
Well, as I was trying to make a decision as to what I was going to do...the possum comes down off of the stairs and starts walking away...away from my door and towards the street. I had to make my move...and so I quickly ran down the sidewalk and up the stairs, safely into my apartment. It was one of those things, that as I got closer to my apartment and the door the faster I went.
It was so freaky looking. I didn't get a picture of it...thought that the neighbors would start to wonder and think I'm a weirdo.
So I found this picture online and I hesitated to put it on my blog, but you have to see how nasty they are. UGH!

Thank you for officially grossing me out today. Sick!! SICK! I hate possums! Wait till Kampman reads this one. I bet she'll post. Possums are sick nasty little things. They'll seriously eat your face off. I laughed and almost peed my pants thinking about you running back to your car like you forgot something. There is nothing to be ashamed of (hello!? i'm scared of squirrels because I saw one run up a girls leg on campus!) no joke. Squirrels, raccons, mice, possums and everything in that family are nasty.
Maybe your neighbors wanted to eat it, don't they eat that sort of thing in Texas? ha ha Just kidding! Love you, glad the possum didn't eat your beautiful face off.

Oh, I can just picture it!! I'm actually surprised you didn't take a picture of it! I would have done the same thing. (I mean run, not take a picture of it, at least I think!)

Are the possoms bigger in Texas?? I bet it had yellow eyes, so help me, it had yellow eyes. Who cares about your neighbors, you just turn and run. But your dad would say, get a picture first.

Possoms are SUPER NICE! I don't know why you were so scared of it, it just wanted to be your friend! They are good little critters :)

signing this, Friend of the possoms...

p.s. the best part is imagining you scooting back to the saftey of your truck while trying to act nonchalant!!

This TOTALLY happened to me in Iowa City!! Right after I moved in to the place where Sangeetha and I lived, I came home after dark one night and a really ugly possum was sitting on the top step! I remember saying out loud, "I grew up in the country around farms and I have no idea what to do right now!" It kind of moved towards the neigbor's door so I quick ran towards our door and went inside. But it could have eaten my face off if I had stuck around!!

I agree with Jamie. I don't know who you people are you like possums. I can accept your personal opinion but I don't have to agree with you. AND it could totally eat your face off. Don't you ever watch CSI.. there was an episode where a dead body was left outside and wild animals came and ate at his face. Nojoke. I base all my scientific information off of CSI. not that smart of me but let's have a little test. You go outside, lay down on the ground and IF after several days of laying there a possum or two hasn't come to gnaw on your lips then I'll give you some money.
I'm with you Jame, sick sick sick!
Also, again I tell you if a SQUIRREL can run up some helpless girls leg than a possum can eat your face.
And Jame, I can't believe you went TOWARDS the raccoon. Sick sister! You are one brave lady! I would have taken to jumping over the balcony and/or pushing my friend (probably Holly) towards it. Yikes!

You've created quite the little debate here, Em. I've never seen such blog activity! This could create a serious division between the opposum lovers and the opossum haters. I'm with the opossum haters. By the way, I always thought there was an "o" at the beginning of opposum. But I'm still not sure if I'm spelling it right. One "s" or two? One "p" or two? This could create another serious division between spelling preferences.

first of all, it's opossum you guys. second of all, usually i would be defending the opossum because i generally love anything considered a "critter" (except things with exoskeletons...ew) but i hate hate hate HATE it when animals have naked tails. HATE! There is nothing grosser than a naked tail (or an exoskeleton). I do like raccoons though. I'm a big fan of animals with masks. And striped tails (that are not naked). My mom had a pet raccoon when she was little that she rescued. She had to let it go when it got old enough to be on its own but I was always sad that she wouldn't let me rescue one from somewhere.

Joanna Kay--your posts are HILARIOUS, but you are confusing the psychotic behavior of squirrels with the gentle harmless Opossum. That thing can't eat your face off, it can't even jump...but the rabid squirrels with their freaky spastic movements and razor sharp teeth--now THAT'S something to fear! I got your back on that sister.

Okay...I have caused craziness. This is so funny! You all are so funny! First of all, Possum is short for Opossum...I looked it up in the dictionary, it can definitely be used both ways.
Second...I still get scared to come home late at night...I'm very cautious and jumpy.
Also...I was telling my friend Denise about it and she said that she knew a guy who had one in his house. He heard something go under his bed, I think he just thought he dropped something and didn't realize what it was and so he took a broom and swooped underneath and it started hissing at him! It took him 4 hours to get that thing out!! yuck.
I really think that if you guys were here with me and saw it's face...you wouldn't think it was so cute...it might have been the devil. It seriously looked like it was going to attack with it's mouth open. CREEPY!!!!

If you are from rural Iowa, it is called "possum." "Opossum" is a sign you are a city slicker and have never actually seen one. Same with "coon" vs. "raccoon." Not sure what the Texas naming etiquette is.

joanna, you know that i would fight most any animal to protect you, but seriously those things have like 160 teeth. sick and wrong.

i would be more afraid of a raccoon or coon than a possum . and eating the face off...... yah if you are dead, any animal would do that....:). now the tail thing yah that is ugly but it is the personality that is cute.
;o )

lm1-not if it's personality is "i'm gonna get ya". I think that's what this possum was thinking when we were staring at each other!
